Immer auf der Suche nach textlichen Grundlagen, haben sich für Rose of Memory, Rose of Forgetfulness zahlreiche Bands der polnischen bzw. russischen Neo-Folk-Labels Wrotycz und Brudenia zusammengefunden, um der Lyrik T.S.Eliots Tribut zu zollen. Als einer der großen Namen der englischsprachigen Literatur ist Eliot bekannt für schwierige, oftmals ans Esoterische grenzende Lyrik, die mit dem Einfühlsvermögen seiner Rezipienten steht und fällt. Somit sind Werke wie The Waste Land ideale Grundlagen für eine musikalische Annäherung, die ebendieses Einfühlsvermögen noch stärker bemüht. Die verschiedenen Annäherungen auf Rose of Memory, Rose of Forgetfulness bilden trotz der großen Menge an Mitwirkenden ein durchaus überzeugendes, kohärentes Stimmungsbild.
Manche Projekte, die teilweise auch mehrfach oder in Abwandlungen auftreten, vertonen Gedichte im Originaltext, andere lassen sich lediglich davon inspirieren und verwenden Auszüge oder nur wenige Zeilen. Gleich der Opener ist ein klassisch akustischer Neofolk-Song. Romantisch-traurig und hauptsächlich dominiert von der Gitarre, ansonsten mit dezenten Tupfern anderer akustischer Instrumente. Bemerkenswert ist das Gesangsduett Mann-Frau: Die tiefe, bassige und ruhige Männerstimme passt perfekt zu der elfenhaften, kristallklaren Frauenstimme! Bei den Lyrics handelt es sich offenbar um die freie Übersetzung eines ELIOT-Gedichtes ins (warum auch immer) Altpreußische, dessen undefinierbar historisches Flair zusammen mit dem östlichen Akzent eine besondere Melancholie ausmacht. Musikalisch lassen sich Vergleiche mit COURAGE OF LASSIE, ZLYE KUKLY oder einigen italienischen Neofolk-Projekten (CORDE OBLIQUE zum Beispiel) ziehen, übers gesamte Album gesehen gibt es von der Stimmung her Parallelen zu "Beauty Reaps The Blood Of Solitude" von NATURE & ORGANISATION.
Eine wirklich gelungene Hommage an einen großen Lyriker. Fast alle Lieder strahlen starke Empathie aus, verströmen lyrisches und romantisches Flair. Feine Songs, tolle Stimmen, klassischer und ruhiger Neofolk. Wer mit einer (oder mehreren) der vielen genannten Bands etwas anfangen kann, mag garantiert auch diesen Sampler. Michael We. für nonpop.de Wrotycz Records rarely releases new stuff, but their albums are mostly on an at least decent level. Now it’s time for a rather unusual compilation where Russian neofolk groups pay their small tribute to T. S. Eliot and his poetry. It’s not the typical compilation following the one artist – one track scheme. Some of the bands in “Rose of Memory, Rose of Forgetfulness” present two or even three songs, sometimes collaborating with eachother. Thus, “Rose of Memory, Rose of Forgetfulness,” gives the impression of a joint project developed by a group of friends who share a passion for music and a fascination with the works of Eliot. However we must remember that some of the songs have already appeared on other albums. I don’t know how the Russians do it, but neofolk performed by them is always very delicate and ethereal, while other nations’ neofolk musicians seem to be quite unfamiliar with these features most of the time. The best of them try to reach beyond the genre (Of The Wand And The Moon is the first example that comes to mind), the rest chase their own tail which already comes out through every hole (many German bands)… The Russians of course haven’t discovered America, so to speak, their musical recipe has been exploited for quite a long time, yet in their case it’s not that irritating. Maybe it’s because there aren’t that many Eastern projects on the neofolk market and critical mass has not been yet exceeded. Anyway, their neofolk – however obvious that may sound – is derived from native Russian folk, adding a pinch of fairy atmosphere and gentle melancholy. But despite the common musical and lyrical background, they don’t do everything after one particular fashion. You can notice Current 93 influences, especially in “Children’s Voices” by Romowe Rikoito and “Cape Ann” by Sunset Wings. Kratong refers to American country/folk in “Red River/Virginia” while in “Rannoch” we fly away to a gentle electronic heaven. Both Kratong and Sunset Wings charm with a lovely saxophone melody in “Usk”, while Waldsonne surprises with Celtic rhythms in “The Hippopotamus”. So obviously a lot happens on this record, but have they managed to capture the spirit of T. S. Eliot’s mystical poetry? In such cases it’s always extremely difficult, if not impossible to do so. In my opinion Neutral have approached this goal the most in the grand finale, the wonderful “The Hollow Men”. Generally however I will not judge if they did it or not. From a strictly musical point of view, this release is certainly worth your attention. If you are familiar with the previous works of the bands mentioned in the review (Kratong and Sunset Wings were released by Wrotycz as well), you will know what to expect, as “Rose of Memory, Rose of Forgetfulness” doesn’t deviate significantly from the previous recordings of these musicians.
We here can speak about a conceptual release, which is dedicated to the work and poetry of Thomas Stearns Eliot. Seven bands contributed to this homage and refined work that were divided in 3 parts. Some of the bands featured on the album also collaborated, which created an intimate and passionate feeling. The different parts are referring to the work of Eliot. “The Recurrent End Of The Beginning” is the 1st part and is featuring 4 songs. We’re diving into an ethereal universe of dreamy music, heavenly voices, feelings of melancholia and loneliness -which perfectly stands for the work of the writer and neo-classical influences. The 2nd part entitled “Landscapes” is dominated by the marvelous and impressive “Children’s Voices” by Romowe Rikoito. This is an acoustic and a bit Celtic sounding ethereal piece of music. I also enjoyed the pure dreamy “Rannoch”-song of Kratong. The 3rd and last part is entitled “We Are The Hollow Men”. This is the darkest part of the release, but still the most fascinating one. Sadness and melancholia are emerging from the songs. Neutral is the last project from this chapter and still the band delivering the best song. “The Hollow Men” is a dark and mysterious kind of ballad with lyrical extracts like ‘this is the way the world would ends’… which is only reinforcing the desperate and isolating feelings this part is provoking. This release still features a great artistic digipak artwork, which I guess perfectly matches with the concept and style of music. The bands aren’t exactly the most familiar names, but their ode to Eliot definitely deserves your attention. |
